What we look for

Ulcers or sore patches that have not healed in three weeks
Red or white patches on the lining of the mouth
Unexplained lumps in the mouth, lips or neck
Persistent hoarseness or difficulty swallowing

How the screening is done

We examine your lips, cheeks, gums, palate, floor of mouth and the sides and underside of your tongue with good light, then feel the tissues and lymph nodes in your neck and under your jaw. Anything unusual is photographed and dated so we can compare accurately at review.

If we find something

Most findings turn out to be harmless — trauma, a viral ulcer or a benign lesion — and we simply review in two weeks. Where anything is suspicious we make an urgent referral to a hospital oral and maxillofacial unit, in the UK usually seen within two weeks.
