Adult molars arrive around age 6 and again around 12. The first two years after eruption are the highest risk, so we usually seal soon after the tooth is fully through and the gum has settled. Deeply grooved premolars and adult teeth with sticky fissures can also be sealed.
Sealants can chip or wear over years of chewing, so we check them at every examination and top them up when needed. They protect the biting surface only — brushing, flossing and limiting sugary snacks still matter for the sides of the teeth.
