Dental Abscess Treatment in London

Severe pain and swelling need treating today, not next week.

A dental abscess is a trapped bacterial infection. Antibiotics alone rarely resolve it — the source must be drained and treated. Request an urgent appointment below.

Types of abscess

A periapical abscess forms at the root tip when the nerve inside a tooth dies, and is treated with root canal treatment or extraction. A periodontal abscess forms in a deep gum pocket and is treated by draining and cleaning the pocket. The treatments are quite different, so accurate diagnosis matters.

Why antibiotics are not the answer alone

Antibiotics may briefly reduce swelling but cannot reach the dead tissue inside a tooth or the debris in a deep pocket, so the infection returns once the course ends. UK guidance is clear: drain and treat the source, and use antibiotics only where there is spreading infection or systemic illness.

When to go to hospital

  • Swelling that closes your eye or crosses the midline of your neck
  • Difficulty swallowing, breathing or opening your mouth
  • A high temperature with feeling generally very unwell
  • Rapidly spreading swelling over hours

These are red flags — go straight to A&E rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
