01 — Why it matters
Baby teeth matter.

Decay in baby teeth causes real pain, infection and missed school, and can damage the adult tooth developing beneath. Losing a baby tooth too early also allows neighbouring teeth to drift into the space.

Our approach is prevention-first: fluoride varnish, fissure sealants and practical dietary advice, so treatment becomes the exception rather than the routine.

02 — Symptoms

Signs your child has toothache.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Complaining of pain when eating
  2. 02Avoiding chewing on one side
  3. 03Waking at night crying or restless
  4. 04Facial or gum swelling
  5. 05A visible dark spot or hole
  6. 06Reluctance to brush one area
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Decay
Frequent sugary snacks and drinks.
Erupting teeth
Normal but uncomfortable teething.
Trauma
A knock during play or sport.
Food impaction
Something wedged between teeth.
Abscess
Infection from untreated decay.
Loose baby teeth
Wobbly teeth catching when eating.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Pain is stopping your child sleeping or eating.
  • There's any facial swelling — see us the same day.
  • A tooth has been knocked or broken.
  • You can see a dark spot or hole.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Facial swelling in a child, especially with a temperature, should be seen urgently. Contact us immediately or attend A&E out of hours.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We settle the pain first, then work out the cause with a gentle examination and X-rays only if needed. Treatment is planned in short, positive appointments to build confidence.
