Crowding

Crowded Teeth

Crowding happens when there isn't enough room in the arch for all the teeth, so they overlap and rotate. It's the most common reason adults ask about aligners — and it matters for gum health as much as appearance.

01 — Why it matters
Crowding is a cleaning problem too.

Overlapping surfaces are almost impossible to clean thoroughly, so crowded areas collect plaque, bleed more and decay more often. Straightening frequently improves gum health measurably.

Crowding also tends to get worse slowly through adult life as the lower incisors drift. Treating it earlier usually means simpler treatment and less enamel adjustment.

02 — Symptoms

Signs of crowding.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Overlapping or rotated front teeth
  2. 02Floss shredding in tight contacts
  3. 03Gums bleeding in specific spots
  4. 04Decay between overlapped teeth
  5. 05A tooth pushed out of the arch line
  6. 06Staining lines where teeth overlap
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Arch size
Teeth simply larger than the available space.
Late lower incisor drift
Gradual adult crowding over decades.
Early tooth loss
Neighbouring teeth drifting into the gap.
Wisdom teeth
Sometimes implicated in late crowding.
Genetics
Inherited jaw and tooth size.
Lost retainers
Relapse after earlier orthodontics.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Your teeth have become more crooked over time.
  • You can't clean between certain teeth.
  • Gums bleed in the crowded areas.
  • You've had decay between overlapping teeth.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Crowding itself doesn't hurt. Pain usually signals decay or gum infection in an area you can't clean — get it checked promptly.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We take photos and a digital scan, show you a simulated result, and set out aligner, fixed brace and bonding options with fixed prices — including how much enamel adjustment, if any, would be needed.
